Motorcycles dominate Laksam roads

Motorcycles dominate Laksam roads

Mashiur Rahman Salim,Comilla South

In the southern region of Comilla, particularly in the town and rural areas of Laksam, hundreds of motorcycles zoom through the paved roads and alleys every day. The majority of these motorcycles are unregistered, and their owners disregard government rules and regulations.

In fact, 90% of the motorcycles in these areas are operating without registration. This has made commuting a serious challenge for the several hundred thousand residents of the area.

Local sources report that the use of unregistered motorcycles has increased significantly in both the streets and alleys of the region. The widespread presence of these motorcycles has caused traffic congestion, with some areas becoming so cramped that it is difficult to even differentiate between the vehicles. Additionally, motorcycles are often parked in front of markets, banks, and offices, as well as in narrow alleys, causing severe traffic jams and inconveniencing pedestrians.

It has also been reported that numerous motorcycles from India, lacking government registration, are operating in the region. These vehicles are creating additional problems, including traffic hazards. In some cases, motorcycles are even associated with illegal activities, including the trafficking of drugs. The motorcycle business has become so popular that both local and international companies have opened several showrooms in the area. Customers often buy motorcycles in cash or through easy installment plans at these showrooms. However, used or stolen motorcycles can often be found at lower prices in markets near the regional borders. Many high-end motorcycles from various brands are now considered a symbol of luxury.

A reliable local administrative source has confirmed that most of these motorcycles lack government registration, and the majority of the drivers do not have driving licenses. Additionally, the haphazard parking of motorcycles is a primary contributor to the traffic jams in these areas. Many of these unregistered motorcycles have been brought in from other regions or even imported from India. It has been reported that the drivers of these motorcycles are often involved in various criminal activities. Some motorcycles even display fake number plates with names like "on-test," "abidit," "press," "news," or the names of local organizations, which allows them to operate for years without any action from the authorities.

Despite these issues, local authorities have largely remained silent. Attempts to reach various local officials for comments have proven unsuccessful. However, a source from the local police has confirmed that a motorcycle retrieval operation is scheduled to begin soon.
