JU suspends 9 teachers, expels 289 BCL men for attacking July protesters

Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities today suspended 9 teachers, 2 officers and a staff as well as expelled 289 Chhatra League men for their alleged involvement in attacking protesting students during the July uprising on the campus.

JU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Kamrul Ahsan surfaced the information at a press briefing early today after an emergency syndicate meeting that lasted at least 16 hours spanning 11 am on Monday to 3 am on Tuesday.

The suspended teachers were accused of directly assisting the police crackdown, and all the expelled students were leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League who were also found involving in attacking students, he said.

"The expelled students will face three types of punishment: revoked certificates for former students, withheld results for those awaiting exams or viva, and expulsion for current students," said JU VC.

Besides, the university authorities formed six faculty-based structured committees to investigate further. A total of 19 teachers have to face the committee, among nine temporarily suspended for allegedly instigating attacks on students and police crackdown that happened from July 14 to 17 last year.

The suspended teachers are - former Pro-VC (Academic) Mohammad Mostafa Feeroz, former proctor Prof Alamgir Kabir, former proctor Associate Prof ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan of Government and Politics department, former dean of Social Sciences faculty Prof Bashir Ahmed, former provost of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall Prof Israfil Ahmed, Associate Prof Mehedi Iqbal of Geography and Environment department, Prof Hosne Ara of History department, former provost of Rabindranath Tagore Hall Nazmul Hassan Talukder and Prof Mohammad Tajuddin Sikdar of Public Health and Informatics department.

Besides, Kanon Kumar Sen of Accounting and Information Systems department, Palash Baha of Institute of Business Administration, Shafi Mohammad Tareq of Environmental Sciences department, Jahirul Islam Khandakar of Physics department, Prof Jahangir Alam of Economics department, Associate Prof Manir Uddin Sikder of Public Administration department, Prof Sayadur Rahman of Public Administration department, Prof Anwar Khasru Parvez of Microbiology department, Assistant Professor Muhibur Rouf Shaibal of Drama and Dramatics department and Prof A A Mamun of Physics department have to face the structured committees only.

The syndicate also suspended the pension benefits of former VC Prof Nurul Alam and former registrar Md Abu Hasan during the investigation period for their alleged involvement in facilitating the police attack on students.

Deputy registrar (Admin-2) Nahidur Rahman Khan and assistant registrar (Academic section) Rajib Chakraborty were also temporarily suspended for allegedly being involved with the attack and a structured committee formed to investigate further.

Mohammad Mohosin Mia, a senior hall attendant of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, also temporarily suspended and a committee formed led by Prof Abdul Halim of Botany department to investigate further.
