Journalists’ voices suppressed in AL regime : Mosharraf

Kalapara (Patuakhali) Correspondent

ABM Mosharraf Hossain, Training Affairs Secretary of the BNP Central Executive Committee and a well-known talk show personality, said, “During the Awami League’s tenure, journalists’ voices were suppressed through the Digital Security Act. We protested it from the very beginning. We want to build a bridge with the media. After the July uprising, when a heavyweight BNP leader threatened to burn down media houses for publishing news against the party, the acting chairman Tarique Rahman immediately suspended all his political posts.”

He made these remarks while addressing a views-exchange meeting with local journalists at the Engineer Md. Touhidur Rahman Auditorium of Kalapara Press Club on Saturday night.

Presided over by Press Club President Md. Nesar Uddin Ahmed Tipu and conducted by General Secretary Amal Mukharjee, Mosharraf further said, “Since August 5, 2024, no untoward incident has occurred here. Under the guidance of Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, BNP leaders and activists in Kalapara have created an example of harmony by uniting people of all opinions and parties.”

Mosharraf added, “An election through the Proportional Representation (PR) system is not possible. Article 166 of our Constitution clearly states that people’s representatives must be elected through direct voting. Therefore, Jamaat-e-Islami and other Islamic parties are demanding constitutional amendments. But such amendments cannot be made without an elected parliament. Hence, the next national election must be held in accordance with the Constitution.”

He also said, “Kalapara is one of the country’s most promising upazilas. It hosts multiple power plants, the Sher-e-Bangla Naval Base, Payra Seaport, Kuakata Tourist Zone, and a submarine landing station. To sustain Kalapara’s development, everyone’s coordinated cooperation is essential.

Among others, the meeting was addressed by Kalapara Upazila BNP President Haji Humayun Sikder, Municipal BNP President Gazi Md. Faruk, General Secretary Musa Tawhid Nannu Munshi, and journalists Humayun Kabir, Shamsul Alam, Mejbah Uddin Mannu, SM Mosharraf Hossain Mintu, Gofran Biswas Palash, Nurul Kabir Jhunu, Jasim Parvez, and Milon Karmakar Raju.
