A high-level science-policy dialogue on black carbon and other short-lived climate pollutants was held at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel on Sunday.
State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam was the chief guest at the inaugural session and Advisor to the Prime Minister and Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office Dr. Mahdi Amin, Principal Coordinator for SDGs of the Prime Minister's Office Professor Dr. SM Abdul Awal, Swedish Ambassador to Bangladesh Nicolas Weeks, and Professor Orjan Gustafsson of Stockholm University spoke as special guests.
State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam said the government will generate 4,000 megawatts (MW) of solar power in the next three months. Of this, 296 MW of electricity will be generated from Dhaka city alone. The state minister added that the initial target for solar power generation is 10,000 MW.
Dr. Mahdi Amin, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office, said that the government is emphasizing renewable energy to address the ongoing energy crisis. He noted that the energy sector is currently in a very fragile state due to various past policies.
Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Abdus Salam said, 'Black carbon' or black carbon is a very small particle floating in the atmosphere, which is produced as a result of incomplete combustion of fossil fuels (such as diesel, octane, petrol) or biomass. Black carbon is formed when there is a lack of sufficient oxygen during the burning of fuel. Black carbon has special photochemical properties; it absorbs solar radiation and heats the surface.
Professor Dr. Abdus Salam said, "We need to strictly implement policies, expand clean transport systems and raise awareness at the household level. In addition, there is a need to strengthen industrial and construction management, regional cooperation and monitoring of long-range pollution transport.
Swedish Ambassador to Bangladesh Nicolas Weeks said that Sweden's new five-year development cooperation strategy with Bangladesh places special emphasis on green transition, climate resilience and environmentally sustainable growth.
