For the first time, Jagannath University is set to host a Baishakhi Mela as part of its upcoming Pohela Boishakh 1432 celebrations. Organized by the Faculty of Fine Arts, preparations are in full swing for both the fair and the annual New Year procession.
During a visit to the campus on Saturday, students from the Fine Arts faculty were seen enthusiastically working on symbolic installations—ranging from bullock carts and birds to animals and flowers—capturing the spirit of rural Bengal.
This year’s theme is: “Biplober siri beye asuk neme alo, noboborshe mukto jibon thakuk aro bhalo” (Let light descend down the stairs of revolution, may the new year bring a freer, better life). The procession and fair aim to reflect the vibrant traditions of rural life in Bengal.
Imam Hossain, Chair of the Sculpture Department, said, “We are in the final stages of our preparation and expect to complete everything before April 14.” He explained that the chosen theme is meant to highlight Bengal’s deep-rooted rural culture, helping the younger generation connect with their heritage and identity.
Acting Registrar Prof Dr Md Sheikh Gias Uddin said, preparations for the Baishakhi Mela are nearing completion. “We originally planned for 30 stalls, and have already received 27 applications. The final number will depend on the total submissions. Various cultural events and stalls will be spread across the campus,” he said.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Rezaul Karim shared his excitement about the event, stating, “We will celebrate the new year with peace and harmony. The Baishakhi Mela will be the centerpiece of this year’s Pohela Boishakh festivities at Jagannath University.”
