There have been complaints of widespread irregularities in the road widening work at Bauphal in Patuakhali.

Residents have expressed their displeasure at the use of low-quality materials in the construction work in broad daylight in front of their eyes.

According to sources, LGED has taken the initiative to widen the road in 2 packages from Baga in Bauphal to Baherchar under the upazila and union level road widening project of Greater Barishal Division in the financial year 2023-2024.

After completing the tender process, the task of implementation of the work was given to a construction company named Mohammad Yunuch and Brothers Private Limited. During the on-site inspection, it was found that 8 feet widening work is going on on both sides of the road from Baga Hogla Bridge to Dariabad.

Low quality bricks are being used in the subbase construction of road extensions. A person named Abu Mia from Konakdia Brijbazar area said that the subbase is being constructed with the abandoned bricks of the mill.

Besides, 8 feet widening is not being done in most places as per schedule.

Earlier, this road was 10 feet wide, as long-distance buses travel on the road, now it is being increased by 8 feet on both sides to make the total 18 feet. But the use of low-quality materials in the widening has created anger among the local residents.

No one from the contractor was found during the inspection of the road. However, Deputy Assistant Engineer of LGED Ali Ibn Abbas, who is in charge of supervision, denied the allegation of irregularities and said that the work is being done according to the schedule.

LGED's Bauphal Upazila Engineer Shyamal Kumar Gain said, proper action will be taken after inspecting the project.
