Heavy rains in Rangamati increase risk of landslides; administration issues warning

 Due to the continuous heavy rains in the last few days due to the low pressure in the Bay of Bengal, the hill district of Rangamati is facing the threat of landslides. In this situation, the administration is working to evacuate people living in vulnerable areas at the foot of the mountains to safe shelters. 
 
The district administration, Red Crescent, Fire Service and other volunteers are miking, requesting people living at risk at the foot of the mountains to take shelter in safe shelters. 
 
 Deputy Commissioner  Mohammad Habib Ullah Maruf and administration officials inspected the vulnerable hills of Bhedbhedi Loknath area on Saturday afternoon. 
 
DC  Mohammad Habib Ullah said,  all preparations have been made to ensure the safety of people's lives and property in Rangamati as well. We have already held meetings with the disaster management committees in 10 upazilas of the district. Administration officials are working. Adequate relief materials have been stocked. The administration is carefully monitoring the situation and taking immediate measures.
 
According to the information provided by the district administration, 246 shelters have been prepared in Rangamati to deal with natural disasters. The number of people taking shelter in the shelters is 672. According to the information provided by the Rangamati Sadar Upazila administration, out of the 26 shelters, only 141 people are staying in the shelters at the Bhedbhedi Loknath Temple Shelter and Reserve Bazar Government High School.
 
Meanwhile, since last Wednesday, there have been reports of small and medium-sized landslides in Rangamati due to the impact of heavy and moderate intermittent rainfall. However, no casualties have been reported.
 
Due to heavy rainfall, the lower areas of Jurachhari, Bilaichhari and Barkal upazilas in the district have also been flooded and extensive damage has been done to agricultural land. The water level of the Kachalong River in Baghaichhari upazila has risen, leaving thousands of people stranded.
 
According to the Rangamati District Meteorological Observatory, 71 millimeters of rainfall was recorded from 6 am to 12 noon on Sunday.
