A tree plantation and sapling distribution program has been organized in Charfasson, Bhola, with the aim of mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change and improving the livelihoods of vulnerable coastal communities.

The initiative was implemented under the Resilient Homestead and Livelihood (RHL) Project, funded by the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) and executed by the Family Development Association (FDA).
As part of the program, approximately 500 beneficiary families and students from local educational institutions received free saplings of five species of fruit-bearing, timber, and medicinal trees in a disaster-prone union.

The event was chaired by Shankar Chandra Debnath, Senior Program Coordinator of FDA. The chief guest was Md. Mamun Hossain, Upazila Social Services Officer of Charfasson. The program was moderated by agriculturist Md. Monirul Islam.
Speakers at the event highlighted that climate-resilient species suitable for saline coastal soils, including mahogany, coconut, neem, and wood apple, would serve as a natural green barrier against cyclones and storm surges while helping prevent soil erosion and protect the environment. In addition, these trees are expected to contribute to household nutrition and create alternative income-generating opportunities for low-income families.

Organizers emphasized the importance of involving students in environmental conservation efforts to raise awareness among the younger generation. They noted that engaging children in such activities from an early age would help foster environmentally responsible citizens in the future.

Chief Guest Md. Mamun Hossain praised the initiative, describing it as a timely and sustainable intervention for coastal communitie.

In his remarks, Chairperson Shankar Chandra Debnath stated, “Our goal is not merely to distribute saplings; it is to transform the homesteads of climate-vulnerable people into climate-resilient.

Speaking at the closing session, RHL Project Manager Mehedi Azam said, “We are not just planting saplings in the coastal soil; we are building a green shield against climate change. Every tree carries the hopes and aspirations of vulnerable people striving to rebuild their lives.”

Stakeholders expressed optimism that this nature-based adaptation initiative would play a significant role in reducing climate-related risks and strengthening disaster resilience in coastal regions in the years to come.
