Bangladesh's first Cashless Prison Management System launched at Munshiganj Jail
Satu Islam, Munshiganj
Bangladesh has launched its first 'cashless prison management system at Munshiganj District Jail as part of ongoing efforts to modernize prison administration, officials said.
The system uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), a wireless technology that employs electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track tags attached to objects, animals, or people. Considered a digital, non-line-of-sight alternative to traditional barcodes, RFID enables remote scanning and monitoring of data.
Under the new system, prison authorities can identify and track the location of inmates within the jail, ensure accurate inmate headcounts in prison wards, and manage financial transactions without the use of cash.
Family members and relatives can deposit money directly into an inmate’s virtual account. Inmates can then use RFID-enabled facilities to purchase items from the prison canteen, eliminating the need for cash transactions inside the jail.
Officials said the initiative has enhanced both operational efficiency and security by ensuring real-time monitoring of inmate locations while creating a fully cashless transaction environment within the prison.
Assistant Inspector General (Media) of the Prison Directorate, Md Jannat-Ul Farhad, said the RFID-based system has initially been introduced at Munshiganj District Jail as a pilot project.
He added that the government plans to gradually expand the system to all prisons across the country following the pilot phase.
