Azizur Rahman, also known as Akash (42), a farm labourer, was killed after being trampled by a wild elephant in Gandhigaon Darbeshtola area under Kangsha Union of Jhenaigati upazila, Sherpur. The incident took place on Tuesday night. Azizur Rahman was the son of the late Abdul Hakim of the same area.
Reportedly, for the past 15 days, the hill villages have been facing intensified attacks from wild elephants. Almost every night, herds of elephants have been wreaking havoc. The hill villagers have been greatly distressed due to this repeated aggression. To protect their crops and lives from wild elephants, villagers have been staying awake at night, lighting torches, beating drums, and setting off firecrackers to drive them away. However, despite their efforts, the hungry elephants continue to descend into localities in search of food, causing extensive damage to banana plantations, vegetable gardens, and various crops painstakingly grown by farmers.
On Tuesday evening, a herd of wild elephants came down from the hills and attacked boro rice fields in the Gandhigaon area. The villagers tried to drive them away with torches. Around 8:30 PM, during this effort, Azizur Rahman was severely injured after being trampled by an elephant. Locals rescued him and took him to the Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Confirming the incident, Jhenaigati UNO Ashraful Rasel said the affected family would be provided government assistance.
