Dhaka University has further strengthened its collaboration with the First Institute of Oceanograp-hy (FIO) under the Ministry of Natural Resources of China to enhance oceanography, ocean observation, forecasting, climate research and disaster resilience.

To this end , two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) have been renewed in Shanghai, China.

These MoUs were renewed during Dhaka University's participation in the China - South Asia Marine Cooperation Forum held in Shanghai . 

Through this , the ongoing joint research , ocean monitoring , information and technology exchange and capacity  building activities of the two institutions will be further expanded.

The MoU between Dhaka University and FIO was signed by Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof  Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam.

 The other MoU was signed between FIO 's Marine Science and Numerical Modeling Laboratory (MASNUM-FIO) and Dhaka University's International Centre for Ocean Governance ( ICOG ) . It was signed by ICOG Director Dr. K.M. Azam Chowdhury .

The delegation of Dhaka University was led by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. ABM Obaidul   Islam . 

The delegation included Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences  Prof  Dr. Md . Humayun Kabir , Dean of the Faculty of Arts Professor Dr. Md . Abul Kalam Sarkar , Associate Professor of the Department of Oceanography and Director of ICOG Dr. K. M. Azam Chowdhury and Lecturer of the Department of Oceanography Alif Mohammad Khan. The Deputy Director General of FIO and senior representatives of the Ministry of Natural Resources of China were present at the event .

Regarding the renewal of the MoU , Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam said , “ This is not a new beginning , but a continuation — which Dhaka University cherishes with great importance .” 

He said , the collaboration with FIO has already  yielded tangible results . Under the joint FIO-DU survey , two GNSS Jing - Wei buoys have been installed in the Rabnabad Channel and the Meghna River estuary , which has helped establish Bangladesh’s first satellite - linked coastal monitoring station . FIO has also exchanged FIO-COM model data with Dhaka University to study the movement of the Bay of Bengal .

The Vice Chancellor   outlined four prior  for future cooperation . These are  expanding the GNSS ocean observation network by deploying additional buoys in the coastal and offshore areas of the Bay of Bengal ; strengthening cooperation on advanced forecasting and disaster risk reduction tools , especially the Ocean to Climate Seamless Forecasting System (OSF) Program and COAST Toolkit; conducting regular joint surveys and expanding opportunities for research , training and data exchange for teachers , researchers and students ; and establishing a China–Bangladesh Joint Research Laboratory at Dhaka University .

Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sci-ences , Prof Dr. Md . Humayun Kabir , said that this partnership can play an important role in disaster risk reduction in Bangladesh .

Dean of the Faculty of Arts , Prof Dr. Md . Abul Kalam Sarkar welcomed this collabration and expressed hope that opportunities for mutual   cooperation will be created in other fields including humanities and social sciences in the future .
