Discussion to improve education quality in Baghaichhari, call to avoid teacher grouping

Baghaichhari (Rangamati) Correspondent

A discussion meeting was held in Baghaichhari, Rangamati, to identify the reasons behind the poor SSC results and improve the quality of education. The meeting was organized by the Upazila Administration on Thursday at the Upazila Parishad Conference Room, with teachers from secondary-level institutions in attendance.

The meeting was chaired by UNO Amena Marjan. This year, out of 1,042 SSC candidates in the upazila, 255 passed, while only two students achieved GPA-5. The average pass rate stood at 24.47 percent.

Teachers identified several factors behind the poor results, including students’ irregular attendance, lack of parental awareness, difficult communication in remote areas, excessive mobile phone use and students’ lack of attention to their studies. However, UNO Amena Marjan said that greater importance should be given to parents’ awareness and sense of responsibility rather than their educational qualifications.

A Union Parishad chairman present at the meeting raised concerns about grouping, internal conflicts and distance among teachers, saying these could negatively affect the educational environment and students’ results. Teachers were urged to avoid groupism and ensure a friendly and positive learning environment.

The meeting recommended ensuring regular student attendance, maintaining communication with parents of absent students, conducting regular class tests, providing special supervision for weak students, arranging additional classes and conducting home visits.

The meeting also discussed preventing mobile phone addiction, drug abuse and child marriage, organizing parents’ meetings, developing students’ moral values, introducing residential facilities in remote schools and taking initiatives to introduce mid-day meals.

The Upazila Secondary Education Officer was assigned to take necessary measures to address the shortage of teachers. A proposal was also made to arrange motivational classes through tag officers to encourage students in their studies.

Assistant Commissioner (Land) Fazle Rabbi, Municipal BNP President Alhaj Nizam Uddin Babu, Upazila Agriculture Officer Nur Alam, OC of Baghaichhari Police Station Nasir Uddin Majumder, the Upazila Secondary Education Officer, leaders of the Press Club and Reporters Unity, and officials from various departments of the administration were present at the meeting.
