Continuous rainfall in Bandarban heightens landslide risks

Sohel Kanti Nath, Bandarban

Due to persistent rainfall and heavy downpours, the risk of landslides is increasing in Bandarban. Heavy rain continuing since Sunday morning has put residents living at the foothills in a precarious situation. The administration is using loudspeakers to urge them to move to safer locations. Additionally, 220 temporary shelters have been prepared across the district for vulnerable residents. A monitoring cell has been established by the district administration to address any disaster situation.

Meanwhile, continuous rainfall and hill runoff have caused water levels in the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers to rise. Due to heavy rain, soil from hills has slid onto various roads, trees have fallen, and parts of some roads have collapsed. However, road connectivity remains normal.

The prolonged rainfall has caused significant hardship for the general public, particularly daily wage laborers who are unable to go to work due to the rain. With Eid-ul-Adha approaching, cattle markets have been unable to operate due to the weather, causing difficulties for both buyers and farmers.

According to the weather office, the latest recorded rainfall was 87 millimeters. The Meteorological Department also indicated that continuous rain is likely to persist for a few more days, with the possibility of landslides and waterlogging due to excessive rainfall
