Bangladesh Coast Guard seized a large consignment of smuggled Indian apparel valued at approximately Tk 6.80 crore during a joint operation along the Kacha River bank near the Old Ferry Ghat area in Pirojpur.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said this in a press release on Sunday afternoon.
According to Coast Guard sources, Station Patharghata conducted a targeted operation in the Bishkhali River near South Charduani under Patharghata Police Station around midnight on October 3 following confidential intelligence. Upon signaling a suspicious fishing boat to halt, the vessel defied orders and attempted to flee the scene.
A joint chase involving police units resulted in intercepting the abandoned boat along the banks of the Kacha River in Pirojpur. Subsequent searches yielded 22,481 pieces of Indian sarees, 50 pieces of three-piece sets, and 50 pieces of lehengas brought into the country evading customs duties. The smugglers fled into the surrounding area, leaving the vessel and contraband behind.
The seized goods and the fishing boat were handed over to Pirojpur Police Station for further legal proceedings, while anti-smuggling operations in the coastal belt remain ongoing.
