Coast Guard recovered foreign firearms, ammunition in Teknaf

The Bangladesh Coast Guard recovered two foreign firearms, magazines, and a large cache of live ammunition during a special raid along the Naf river in Teknaf upazila early Wednesday.

Lt. Cmdr. Sabbir Alam Sujon, media officer for the Coast Guard said thid in a press briefing on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Coast Guard, acting on a tip-off that a syndicate was attempting to smuggle weapons from Myanmar across the Naf river border to a terrorist group in a local Rohingya camp, a special operation was launched by BCG Station Teknaf between midnight and 8:00 AM on Wednesday.

During the patrol, personnel signaled a suspicious wooden boat to halt. Ignoring the signal, the occupants sped toward the mangrove forests of Naitongpara, abandoned the vessel, and fled into the area.

A subsequent search of the boat led to the recovery of one foreign SVD Dragunov rifle with a magazine, one 9mm foreign pistol with a magazine, 229 rounds of live rifle ammunition, two rounds of live and one blank round of pistol ammunition, and two MA-1 rifle magazines ingeniously concealed inside fishing nets.

Authorities said intelligence surveillance and patrol activities have been intensified to track down and apprehend those connected to the smuggling ring, while legal procedures regarding the seized weapons, ammunition, and boat are currently underway.
