
BNP activist Mahfuz murder: Case against 407 including Sheikh Hasina, journalists, lawyers

In connection with the shooting death of BNP activist Mahfuz Alam Shraban during an anti-discrimination movement in the capital's Mirpur, a case has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina along with 407 others.
The case names former ministers and MPs from Hasina’s government, former two mayors of Dhaka, journalists, businessmen, election commissioners, and lawyers among the accused.
Actor Iresh Zaker is also included in the list of accused. The case was filed by the deceased’s brother, Mostafizur Rahman Bappi, in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibuzzaman on April 20. On that day, the court recorded the plaintiff's statement and instructed the OC of Mirpur Model Police Station to register it as a regular case, according to him.
The matter of filing the case was confirmed on Sunday by SI Rafiqul of the prosecution department of Mirpur Model Police Station.
Among those accused along with Sheikh Hasina are: former Prime Minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Awami League leaders Amir Hossain Amu, Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Salman F Rahman, Anisul Haque, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Tajul Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Kamrul Islam, Faruk Khan, Asaduzzaman Noor, Zahid Maleque Swapan, Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury Liton, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Lutfuzzaman Babar, Naufel Chowdhury, Shajahan Khan, Abdur Razzaque, Sheikh Helal, Tarana Halim, Sanjida Khanam, Dr. Pran Gopal Dutta, Nixon Chowdhury, Nurunnabi Chowdhury Shaon, Shamim Osman, Nazmul Hassan Papon, Kazi Nabil Ahmed, AK Azad, Tarique Siddique, Tawfiq-e-Elahi, Gowher Rizvi, Moshiur Rahman, Chairman of Bashundhara Group Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir, Director Sadat Sobhan Tanvir, Chairman of S Alam Group Saiful Islam, former Chairman of ACC Iqbal Mahmud, Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah, Managing Director of Asiatic 360 Group and actor Iresh Zaker, former Justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik.
Among the accused journalists are: Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Shaban Mahmud, Arif Hasan, Mozammel Haque Babu, Naimul Islam Khan, Piyush Bandyopadhyay, Naim Nizam, Subhash Singh Roy, Shyamal Dutta, Farzana Rupa, Munni Saha, J I Mamun, Shakil Ahmed, Mithila Farzana, Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, Harun ur Rashid, Nasiruddin Sathi, Nabonita Chowdhury, Abul Kalam Azad, Omar Faruq, Shafiqul Rahman, Farida Parveen and Masuda Bhatti.
Among the accused lawyers are: Syed Rezaur Rahman, Nazibul Ullah Hiru, and former two prosecutors of ACC Khurshid Alam Khan and Mosharraf Hossain Kajol, former three Chief Election Commissioners Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed, KM Nurul Huda, Kazi Habibul Awal, and former three Election Commissioners Mohammad Sadiq, Helal Uddin Ahmed, and Dr. Sadiq have also been named.
The case complaint stated that BNP activist Mahfuz Alam Shraban (21) had been participating in the anti-discrimination student movement since its inception. On the day of the incident, August 5, around 2:30 PM, while a procession of student protestors was passing through the road between Mirpur Shopping Complex and Mirpur Model Police Station, chanting various slogans, five hundred leaders and activists under the direction of the accused launched a sudden attack on the peaceful procession.
The complaint further states that they fired sound grenades, tear shells, rubber bullets, rifle shots, shotgun and pistol shots, and detonated cocktails and hand bombs. During this assault, Shraban was shot and injured by the accused. He was rushed to a hospital in Mirpur by rickshaw, where the attending physician declared him dead.
