Accused in dacoity case gets bail for telling truth to court in Munshiganj
Munsiganj (South) Correspondent
In a robbery preparation case under trial in the Munshiganj court, accused Awlad Hossain Bepari (35) had been in jail custody. Due to lack of money, he could not hire a lawyer. After verifying the truthfulness of the accused's statement, the judge, Chief Judicial Magistrate Gazi Delwar Hossain, granted bail on humanitarian grounds, allowing the accused to go free under personal custody.
On Sunday afternoon, during court proceedings, the judge asked the accused for the truth. The accused responded, "I work as a mason. As I had no work, I went out to steal. But I am not a robber." Based on this verbal confession, the judge, considering the situation humanely, granted him bail under personal custody. The matter was confirmed by the court's bench assistant, Md. Bulbul Ahmed. The accused, Awlad Hossain Bepari, is the son of the late Sajal Bepari of Goalpada village, Shologhar, Srinagar Upazila.
According to case sources, on the afternoon of August 17, 2023, police arrested two accused with various local weapons while they were preparing for a robbery near KC Road in Hasara, along the Dhaka-Mawa highway in Srinagar Upazila. One accused managed to escape. Following this, Sub-Inspector Md. Ariful Islam filed a case with Srinagar Police Station, naming the detained individuals and 5–6 unidentified others as accused.
Awlad Hossain Bepari was later identified and arrested as one of the unnamed accused on November 10, 2023. After 18 days in jail, he was released on bail through a lawyer. However, due to financial hardship, he was unable to attend court, resulting in the cancellation of his bail. Police arrested him again on May 21 and presented him before the court.
As the case was scheduled for hearing yesterday, Sunday, the accused was brought to court from jail. After recording his verbal confession, the judge granted him bail under personal custody. Several lawyers and justice seekers present in the courtroom expressed their satisfaction with the judge's decision. Many said, "This is the kind of compassionate judge the poor need — may the Creator bless him."
After the hearing, when asked, Awlad Hossain said, “I’m a mason by profession. I have a family of five, including three children. As we couldn’t afford food properly, I was forced into stealing at that time. But I’m not a robber. I couldn’t afford a lawyer, and none of my family came to court today as we couldn’t even manage food. I told the truth in court. Because of that, the judge kindly granted me bail. He is a very good man.”
Regarding the matter, Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Sultana Rozina Yasmin said, “I’m the government lawyer of this court. Since taking this responsibility, I’ve observed that the Chief Judicial Magistrate works with great dedication. In the interest of justice, he spends valuable court time to resolve even big issues through discussion. Today, he questioned the accused, verified the truth, and did a noble deed by granting bail on humanitarian grounds. I wish him continued success in the future.”
