The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched a probe into construction of residential buildings for government officials on land originally acquired for people displaced by the Dhaka Elevated Expressway project.
An enforcement team of the ACC conducted a drive at the office of the Bangladesh Bridge Authority in the capital’s Banani area on Sunday in connection with the allegations, said a press release.
According to the ACC, under the ‘Support to Dhaka Elevated Expressway PPP Project,’ around 40 acres of land were acquired to build a rehabilitation village for those affected by the mega infrastructure project.
As part of the plan, 1,344 flats were constructed in 12 buildings for the affected families.
During the drive, the ACC team found that 1.15 acres of the same land were being used to construct four additional buildings—named Padma, Meghna, Jamuna, and Karnaphuli—comprising 280 flats designated for high-ranking government officials, including those at the secretary level.
These officials were not among those displaced by the expressway project.
During the drive, the ACC collected various documents from the Bridge Authority office and spoke with relevant officials.
The collected documents will be examined thoroughly and a detailed report will be submitted to the Commission for further action, said the press release.
