
6 people burnt in gas explosion, building wall collapses in Savar

An explosion occurred due to gas leakage in a house in Ashulia, Savar. Several walls of the ground floor of the building collapsed and at least 6 people were burned. 4 of them have been sent to the National Burn Institute in the capital. The incident took place in the Mandal Market area of Nishchintapur, Ashulia, at around 7:30 am on Wednesday.
The injured are Jahanara (40), Jewel (24), Shanto (21), Hawa Akhter (23), Zahurul Islam (26) and Nasir (38). Nasir has been discharged after receiving first aid.
Police and locals said that when Zahirul Islam, a tenant of the ground floor of Jewel Mia's two-story house, tried to light a gas stove for cooking in the morning, it exploded with a loud noise. This caused the walls of various parts of the building to collapse. At least 6 people were also burned in the gas explosion. Later, locals rescued them and first took them to the local Women and Children's Hospital. Two of them were given primary treatment there and the remaining 4 were sent to the National Burn Institute in the capital for advanced treatment.
Shamim Mia, the manager of Jewel Mia's house, said that there was a leak in the riser of the ground floor tenant Zahurul Islam's room. As the doors and windows were closed, gas had been leaking out and accumulating in the house all night. Around 7:30 am, when the fire was lit for cooking, a loud noise occurred and the wall of the house collapsed.
Al Rifat Talukder, duty officer of the Jirabo Fire Service, said that gas had accumulated in the room due to a leakage of cylinder gas. The explosion occurred due to the accumulated gas. The matter is being investigated and details will be announced later.
