'Engage' project for climate, environmental protection in Joypurhat

The People's Union of the Marginalized Development Organization (PAMDO) is implementing a new project to create awareness about climate change, environmental risks and natural disasters, as well as establish the rights of marginalized communities, in three unions of Joypurhat Sadar Upazila.
The project titled 'Environmental Human Rights for a Just Transition: Strengthened Local C-S-Os Transforming Climate Hotspots into Resilient Communities (ENGAGE)' is being implemented as the PAMDO-ENGAGE project at a glance. The project period is from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2028.
Dhalahar, Dogachhi and Bhadsa unions of Joypurhat Sadar Upazila have been identified under the project. About 590 families will be directly benefited and 12,900 people will be indirectly benefited.
The main goal of the project is to raise awareness among indigenous women, farmers, and youth about combating climate change and man-made natural disasters, develop participatory leadership to establish their rights, and take initiatives to preserve the endangered traditions and culture of indigenous people.
The project will increase awareness among local people about climate change, man-made natural disasters and environmental risks, strengthen local participatory initiatives and networking. In addition, cultural groups will be formed, various festivals will be celebrated and sports competitions will be organized to ensure the land rights of indigenous people, participation in environmentally friendly livelihoods and preservation of endangered indigenous cultures.
In addition, emphasis has also been placed on increasing the organizational capacity of Palmdo through the project.
Mr. Haimanti Sarkar is serving as the Chief Executive Officer and Project Director. Md. Shahabur Rahman is serving as the General Manager and Community Coordinator. Sumi Rani and Bimal Chandra Pahan are serving as Community Organizers.
Project stakeholders said that the project will play an important role in addressing climate and environmental risks, establishing rights, and improving the quality of life of marginalized communities by increasing the participation of local communities.
