Drugs as easy to get as street snacks: Growing concern over drug abuse in Dharmadah

Md. Belal Hossain, Kushtia

Residents, guardians, and members of civil society have expressed deep concern over the alarming spread of illegal drugs in Dharmadah village under Daulatpur Upazila of Kushtia.

They allege that cannabis, phensedyl, yaba, and other narcotics are now readily available in neighborhoods, along roads, and at public gathering spots, making drugs easily accessible to anyone. As a result, many young people and students are reportedly becoming involved in drug abuse.

According to local residents, drug trafficking continues day and night throughout Dharmadah village. They claim that the activities of drug dealers have increased significantly compared to previous years. While drug sales were once carried out secretly, locals now allege that the trade is taking place openly.

One individual, identified as Swapan Maker, has long been accused of involvement in drug trafficking. However, many residents are afraid to speak publicly due to fear of retaliation.

Investigations suggest that drug trafficking has spread to remote rural areas across the upazila. According to local sources, drug addiction is increasing among people from all socioeconomic backgrounds. They also allege that a section of young people, school and college students, businesspersons, and even members of various political groups have become involved with drugs.

Field observations indicate that although wealthier users tend to consume phensedyl, middle- and lower-income individuals are increasingly turning to yaba and cannabis because of their lower cost. Residents claim that drugs are supplied through motorcycles and battery-powered auto-rickshaws to isolated locations. Allegations have also been made that drugs are openly sold near motorcycle garages and other important local spots.

A teacher at Dharmadah Secondary School said, many of those involved in drug trafficking are young. The devastating impact of drugs is destroying our younger generation. As teachers and parents, we are deeply worried about the future of our school and college students."

A local social worker, who requested anonymity, said, there are allegations that influential individuals have connections with both local and external drug syndicates. Unless these networks are dismantled, drug trafficking and addiction will continue to increase.

Concerned citizens of Dharmadah have urged the authorities to take strict action to protect the younger generation from the devastating effects of drugs. They have also called for a thorough investigation into the allegations against Swapan Maker and appropriate legal action if the allegations are proven.

OC Md. Khaledur Rahman of Daulatpur Police Station said, we are giving the highest priority to combating drugs. The allegations will be verified, and necessary legal action will be taken. Our anti-drug operations will continue. .
