Unable to bear burden of debt: Headmaster commits suicide, Tungipara stunned

Police have recovered the hanging body of Bidyutkanti Roy (55), headmaster of Patgati Munshibari Government Primary School No. 30 in Tungipara upazila of Gopalganj. His body was recovered from a Kamranga tree in the courtyard of his house in Dariarkul village of Patgati union of the upazila on Sunday morning.
The deceased Bidyutkanti Roy is the son of the late Gangaprasad Roy of Dariarkul village. He was well-known in the area as an honest, idealistic and ethical teacher during his long teaching career. His sudden death has cast a shadow of deep grief among his family, colleagues, students and locals.
According to local sources, it is believed that he hanged himself from a Kamranga tree in the courtyard of his house at around 4:30 am. Around 6 am, his cousin's wife saw him hanging from a tree and screamed, prompting people to rush to the spot.
Upon receiving the news, Tungipara Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Muslim Uddin reached the spot with his team and recovered the body. Later, an autopsy report was prepared and sent to the morgue of the 250-bed Gopalganj General Hospital for autopsy.
SI Muslim Uddin said that after talking to family members, it was initially learned that Bidyutkanti Roy had taken loans from various banks and local sources. According to the family, he was mentally depressed due to the pressure of the loan. However, the real cause of death will have to wait until the autopsy report is received.
Meanwhile, as news of his death spread, a shadow of grief fell among the locals, the teaching community and former students. Many remember him as a dedicated teacher, a decent person and a person who was friendly to education.
According to family sources, the body will be brought home after the autopsy and the last rites will be performed at his home.
The tragic death of an ideal teacher has created deep grief among people from all walks of life, including the educational community of Tungipara.
