In Ward No. 7 of Sreepur Municipality in Gazipur, the sudden closure of a road long used by the public has plunged at least 60 families into extreme hardship. Locals allege that a person named Nuruzzaman recently constructed a structure on this road, causing this misery.
On-site inspection on Wednesday revealed a brick-surfaced road about 7 feet wide adjacent to the boundary wall of a garment factory named Aswad. For many years, area residents have been using this path without hindrance. This is not just a narrow alley but the main route for surrounding residents to access schools, mosques, markets, and the garment factory. However, recently, Nuruzzaman erected a structure by installing cement pillars in the middle of the road, narrowing it significantly. This has created severe problems not only for vehicles but also for pedestrians.
Local Abul Hossain expressed anger, saying, “We have been using this road for about 60 years. Now, its sudden closure means no vehicles can pass. Even taking a patient to the hospital requires a long detour. This is unacceptable from a humanitarian perspective.”
Another affected resident, Abbas Ali, said, “If a quick solution isn’t found, we will be forced to resort to human chains and protest programs.”
At this time, multiple local residents complained that even after informing the accused Nuruzzaman about the issue, he paid no heed. They are preparing to submit a written complaint to the administration to ensure the public's right to movement.
The accused Nuruzzaman, however, denied the allegations and claimed, “I built the structure on my own land. I cannot allow anyone to use a road over my property.”
The area's residents hope that the administration will swiftly intervene, reopen this long-used public road, and alleviate the suffering of the affected families.
