Grameenphone, the country's leading telecom operator, has been named the 'Most Sustainable Telecommunication Company of the Year' at the SDG Brand Champion Awards 2025 for its work in digital inclusion, environmental sustainability, and inclusive development.

The company received three major accolades, including SDG Brand Champion in Climate and Environment and SDG Brand Champion in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. It also received honourable mentions in two additional categories: Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Women Empowerment.

The awards were handed over at a ceremony held at a city hotel recently. Grameenphone's Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Tanveer Mohammad, accepted the awards on behalf of the company. Also present were Farhana Islam, Head of ESG; Abdulla Al Mahmud, Head of Customer Service; and Sharmin Rahman, Head of Corporate Portfolio.

Grameenphone's sustainability strategy is aligned with national priorities and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on digital access, youth upskilling, and climate action.

"Our mission is to empower societies through digital connectivity that is inclusive, responsible and sustainable," said Tanveer Mohammad. "Future SDG-driven initiatives must reflect local realities, prioritise inclusivity, and leverage technology to scale impact.

This recognition reaffirms our commitment to people-first innovation and climate-conscious progress."

As part of its digital inclusion drive, Grameenphone, alongside Plan International Bangladesh, has trained over 3.3 million people in digital literacy and online safety, with 68% of the participants being women from marginalised groups. With UNICEF, the company has delivered digital education to 4.7 million children and 25,000 teachers.

Its other notable efforts include upskilling 100,000 youth in partnership with the UNDP, supporting rural tech entrepreneurs through the GP Academy and Accelerator, and investing in sustainable energy. The operator has offset 47% of its grid electricity usage through Renewable Energy Attribute Certificates (RECs), powered over 1,000 sites with solar energy, and recycled 1,473 tonnes of e-waste.

By driving tech-based solutions to bridge both digital and climate divides, Grameenphone continues to embed sustainability at the heart of its operations.
