VP Sajjad seeks BNP post to protect wealth worth hundreds of crores

Noakhali Correspondent

While BNP leaders and activists were facing extreme repression under Awami fascism—suffering from attacks, lawsuits, imprisonment, and court proceedings—VP Sajjad and his associates amassed hundreds of crores of taka with the support of Noakhali Sadar’s illegal MP and political manipulator Ekramul Karim Chowdhury, and Hatiya’s Md. Ali.

According to local sources, Sajjad earned vast wealth during the Awami League’s rule by controlling tender businesses in Noakhali and Hatiya. He has been repeatedly recognized as one of the top taxpayers in Noakhali. Sajjad, a member of an Awami League family, is the son of a former vice-president of Hatiya Upazila Awami League. His brother, Badrul Haider Chowdhury, has served as president of Hatiya Upazila Chhatra League, later vice-president of the municipal Awami League, and is currently serving as joint general secretary of Hatiya Upazila Awami League. Sajjad and his family were never involved with BNP during hard times.

Before August 5, Sajjad’s brother Sohel Chowdhury allegedly played a central role in repressing BNP activists in Hatiya as an ally of fascism. For the past 16 years, VP Sajjad’s family supported Md. Ali in establishing dictatorial rule in Hatiya and, in return, gained ownership of assets worth hundreds of crores. Their hotel “Red Sea” in Ujkhali frequently hosted Awami leaders' drinking and entertainment sessions.

It was also reported that in collaboration with his uncle Jaber, Sajjad’s family embezzled hundreds of crores in Maijdi Bazar, Noakhali town. Rahat, Sajjad’s brother, became immensely wealthy through tenders in departments like LGED, Public Health, and Roads and Highways—most of which operated under Sajjad’s license. Sajjad even received top taxpayer awards twice due to this. At a time when BNP activists could barely survive under Awami rule, Sajjad’s recognition as a top taxpayer raises serious questions.

Several anonymous sources said that for the past 16–17 years, neither VP Sajjad nor his brother-in-law, late Awami leader Prince Kamal’s son VP Rashed, were seen at any BNP event. They consistently supported Awami League’s power and donated lakhs to its programs in exchange for benefits.

However, after the political shift on August 5, VP Sajjad went into hiding in Dhaka with his family. His two brothers are still fugitives. A few months later, he re-emerged in Maijdi by reportedly managing a few BNP leaders. He is now on a new mission—spending money on activists in Hatiya to become a BNP leader there.

Establishing himself in Hatiya BNP would mean securing the hundreds of crores worth of assets amassed during the Awami League era—a family decision. If hybrid opportunists like Sajjad are given leadership, Hatiya BNP will fall into the hands of looters whose motive is to regain control over tenders and protect illegally earned wealth. Notably, Sajjad was never seen participating in protests or meetings in Hatiya in the last 15 years.

Hatiya locals demand that Noakhali district BNP and Hatiya BNP leaders remain vigilant so fascist collaborators do not once again establish a reign of terror in Hatiya under the banner of BNP. Leadership must not be handed over to opportunists.

District BNP Member Secretary Harunur Rashid Azad said, “I’ve heard about this from various sources. His entire family is involved with the Awami League; his father and brothers hold key posts. Though he was once with BNP, I never saw him at any BNP program before August 5. Lately, he has been attending some BNP events.”

When asked, Noakhali District BNP Convener Mahbub Alamgir Alo said, “It’s true that VP Sajjad has been seen at several BNP programs recently. I can't deny that. But I am not fully informed about everything concerning him. The matter will be investigated.”
