Speakers at a view-exchange meeting here today said student-led mass upsurge has flourished opportunity to establish democratic state and society with paving the way for building an anti-discriminatory and humanitarian system being imbued with accountability.

They came up with the observation while addressing the view-exchange meeting organized by Democratic State Council (DSC), a policy research and evaluation platform, at Jatiya Press Club.

Biplobi Workers Party General Secretary Saiful Haque, BNP leader and former lawmaker Barrister Rumeen Farhana, Bangladesh Constitutional Reform Commission Member Dr Zahed Ur Rahman, journalist Abu Sayeed Khan, Advocate Tasnim Rana, among others, addressed it with DSC Convener Sheikh Abdun Nur in the chair.

The speakers said opportunities were created after the Liberation War and the mass upsurge of 1990. But, the political parties couldn't able to leverage the scope for their imprudence, they said.

Saiful Haque said the old syndicates are still controlling the markets of essentials as the interim government should take proper steps to bring the market under control.

He said police should perform their duties properly to make sure that people doesn't feel insecurity.

Mentioning that the countrymen want reforms and changes in every sector, he said election is one of the big challenges of the interim government.

"It will be there main success if they can handover the power to an elected government," Haque said.

Barrister Farhana said a big part of the society wants changes in all sectors.

She said there are no practices of evaluating merit and opinions in the politics. "Election could not change the fate of the people if politics are not in the right track", she said.

She also said the 2024's mass upsurge was the expression of anger against the fallen Awami League government.

"The countrymen don't want the fascist regime to come back. They want equity based anti-discriminatory democratic state, government, constitution and a humanitarian society", Farhana said.

She expressed her hope that the countrymen can choose their own proper ways.

Dr Jahed said discussions should be continued in a democratic society. "It is normal that all doesn’t possess same belief, opinions, but everyone should be united," he added.

He said most of the people were against the fascist government. "We want such a country where rights, dignity and opportunity of all people should be ensured," he continued.
