Staff Correspondent

Awami League (AL) general secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said that the party nominated the slain Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar based on his popularity in the constituency not for who he was.

The minister told this at the Eid reunion of the members of newly formed youth and sports sub-committee of the Awami League at Dhaka district unit AL office at Tejgaon in the capital on Thursday.

Responding to the written questions from journalists regarding the media reports in Kolkata that said that the governing Bangladesh Awami League’s MP from Jhenaidah-4 constituency Anwarul Azim, who was killed in India’s Kolkata, was a gold smuggler, Quader said it does not matter what he was. Anwarul was nominated because of his popularity in the constituency, he added.

He said the MP was killed in Kolkata and no one could say anything before the investigation is completed. The AL general secretary said the lawmaker Anwarul was killed in Kolkata and no one could say anything on the murder before the investigation is completed”.

He said if anyone visits his area, he/she will found people are grieving his demise. Anwarul roamed around his constituency every day on cars or motorcycles to meet the people. AL nominated him for the third time from the party due to his popularity.

Quader reminded everyone about the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ‘zero tolerance policy’ against any kind of crime and said she will not forgive any party insider in this regard.
