Skyrocketing prices in Chattogram: Daily necessities out of public reach

The people of Chattogram are struggling to cope with the abnormal rise in the prices of essential commodities. From grocery stores to fresh markets, uncontrolled price hikes are evident everywhere.
The prices of essentials like vegetables, lentils, oil, and rice have become unaffordable for the general public, making many feel as if they are touching fire when they go to the market.
The prices of vegetables in the fresh markets have soared to between 80 and 160 BDT per kilogram, while eggs, often referred to as "the protein of the poor," are now being sold at 15-16 BDT per piece. The price of pangasius fish and poultry has surpassed 200 BDT. Even potatoes have turned into a luxury item for many.
Many are returning from the market in despair, with their stocks nearly depleted. Those with small savings have stretched them as far as they could, but now they see no hope ahead. With no money in hand and no food in the stomach, the question arises: how will people survive such a crisis?
The continuous increase in the prices of daily essentials is eroding public trust in the government. Although there have been promises of action to control prices, no tangible effect has been seen in the market. Prices continue to rise daily, and the helplessness of ordinary people deepens.
Meanwhile, farmers are not receiving fair prices for their produce. Due to middlemen, these goods are becoming unaffordable for the average consumer. Although the government has taken some steps, such as reducing import duties, forming task forces, and ensuring increased supply, these efforts have not been enough.
Experts suggest that the government must take stricter measures to curb the influence of syndicates and dishonest traders in the market. Additionally, discussions with business owners to ensure fair pricing are crucial. There is no alternative to establishing proper control in the market to alleviate the suffering of the common people.
Without effective government intervention, a solution to this situation seems impossible.
