Nurul Haque Nur, former VP of DUCSU of Dhaka University and president of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, has announced his candidacy for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
He has announced to participate in the parliamentary elections from Patuakhali-3 constituency (Galachipa and Dashmina).
Nur said: "There has been some confusion, with people suggesting that VP Nur will contest from Dhaka. While I could contest from anywhere in Bangladesh, I cannot forget my roots. I grew up in the mud of this char (island) and the water of this river—how could I forget so easily? If you support me, I will contest from Patuakhali-3."
"There is an interim government formed under special circumstances, and this government is struggling to stabilize the state. Perhaps the parliamentary elections will take place in the next year or within two years.”
He made these remarks as the chief guest at a public reception held at a high school ground in Galachipa, Patuakhali, on Tuesday.
Nur emphasized the need for a politics of solidarity and tolerance rather than revenge and hostility, asserting that "a new Bangladesh cannot be built with old leadership from old parties."
He called for new politics and new leadership to create a new Bangladesh, noting: "The Gana Odhikar Parishad is experiencing a surge in public support. We demand reforms in this state system to prevent any single party from forming a fascist government."
"Therefore, we have proposed a bicameral parliament, proportional representation, and a four-year term for parliament. Most parties agree that all should be represented in parliament. No unethical politics will be allowed in the new Bangladesh," Nur added further.
