Arial Beel humming with migratory birds

The arrival of winter migratory birds in Srinagar, particularly in Arial Beel and other nearby fields, has been steadily increasing.
Flocks of migratory birds are flying in from thousands of miles away, flocking to water bodies and paddy fields, creating a spectacular sight that feels like a bird festival. Arial Beel has become lively with the presence of various migratory birds, including greylag geese, pintails, egrets, adjutant storks, pond herons, cormorants, Asian openbills, kingfishers, and white gulls, among many other unnamed species.
Large flocks of birds can be seen searching for food in the vast fields of Arial Beel. They feed on small fish and snails in shallow water. Additionally, in areas like Birtara, Patabhog, Paschim Naopara, Atpara, and Gadighat, migratory birds are foraging in the water bodies and paddy fields. Locals report that as the cold intensifies, the number of these birds has significantly increased, particularly species like Asian openbills, egrets, and greylag geese. From early morning, birds are visible searching for food, and by evening, they gather in flocks to settle on tall trees in the area.Mohammad Shamim, a local passerby, shared his joy at witnessing the flocks of Asian openbills foraging in the foggy morning.
According to reports, migratory birds travel to Bangladesh to escape harsh winters, food shortages, and unsuitable habitats in their native regions. Birds from Africa, Europe, and various parts of South Asia start arriving in Bangladesh during this season. These migratory birds are a valuable natural asset, consuming pests harmful to crops and enriching the soil with their droppings.
The Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division in Dhaka emphasizes the legal protection of these birds. Wildlife inspector Nigar Sultana stated that killing or harming migratory birds is a punishable offense.
According to the law:1. Killing any birds listed in Schedules 1 and 2, including migratory birds, is a criminal offense. 2. Possessing, selling, or transporting their trophies, incomplete trophies, meat, or body parts is also prohibited.The penalties for such offenses include:First offense: Up to 1 year of imprisonment, a maximum fine of 1 lakh BDT, or both. Repeat offense: Up to 2 years of imprisonment, a fine of 2 lakh BDT, or both.Lesser offenses may result in up to 6 months of imprisonment, a fine of 30,000 BDT, or both, with repeat offenses leading to harsher penalties of up to 1 year of imprisonment or a fine of 50,000 BDT.
Authorities and locals alike urge everyone to protect these natural treasures, which enrich the ecosystem and contribute to the country's biodiversity.
