Wife killed by mentally unstable husband in Gafargaon

A housewife named Marzia Akhter (29) was stabbed to death by her mentally unstable husband in Gafargaon, Mymensingh.

The incident took place on Thursday night in Kurshapur village of Jashra union of the upazila.

According to police and local sources, Mohammad Ali's son Nazmul Alam (35) had been suffering from mental instability for a long time and was undergoing treatment. On the night of the incident, he was sleeping with his wife Marzia.

At one point in the night, he stabbed Marzia in the stomach with a knife. Hearing screams, family members entered the house and saw Marzia lying on the bed in a bloody state. Nazmul was sitting quietly next to her. When the family members rescued Marzia and took her to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, the doctor declared her dead. The deceased Marzia has a daughter and two sons. The deceased's brother Ashraful Alam said, 'Our brother-in-law Nazmul was mentally ill and was undergoing treatment. But none of us could have imagined that he could do such a terrible thing.’ Nazmul’s mother Matija Begum said, ‘The son and daughter-in-law were sleeping together at night.

Suddenly, hearing a scream, I broke the door and went inside to see Marzia lying injured on the bed and Nazmul sitting next to her.’ Gafargaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Shibirul Islam said, ‘The police visited the scene and recovered the body of the deceased and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for autopsy. The accused Nazmul Alam has been absconding since the incident. A police operation is underway to arrest him.’
