Internet disruptions to continue

The country’s ground-based internet services would remain slow until a crack on the second submarine cable is repaired, said Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC (BSCPLC) in a press release issued Saturday.

The global SEA-ME-WE 5 submarine cable consortium is working to repair and rejoin the split sections of the cable at the earliest, BSCPLC added.

The split occurred on the cable at about 440-km west of Singapore on Friday midnight due to unknown reasons. The breakdown halted all internet traffic between Singapore and Bangladesh through the SEA-ME-WE 5 cable, also known as the second submarine cable in the country.

In the meantime, the first submarine cable, SEA-ME-WE 4, and ground-based bandwidth imported from India are continuing to support internet users.

BSCPLC said that a significant amount of bandwidth usually carried by SEA-ME-WE 5 is being transferred to SEA-ME-WE 4, to minimise internet disruptions expected until the repairing work for the former is completed.
