In Jhenaigati Upazila, a helpless family of Sadek Ali from Gomra village under Nolkorua Union is on the run after receiving threats from the notorious border drug lord Rasel and his gang.

The incident took place at 10:00 am on Tuesday  in Shandhakura village of the upazila.

According to sources , in May this year police seized a large consignment of drugs belonging to Rasel’s gang in the Gomra area. Suspecting that Sadek Ali’s family had informed the police, gang members attacked his son Habibur Rahman (20) in Shandhakura village and broke his left leg. Habibur was first admitted to Sherpur District Hospital and later to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Even after four months, his injured leg has not healed.

In this regard, Habibur’s brother-in-law Karim Mia filed a case with Jhenaigati Police Station, naming 8–10 members of the Rasel gang as accused. However, even after four months, police have not been able to arrest any of them. Police explained that since cases were filed against them, the gang members have gone into hiding, making arrests difficult.

Meanwhile, when the incident drew the attention of journalists, members of Rasel’s gang brutally assaulted journalist Khorshed Alam on Friday night, 15 August, leaving him critically injured. He is currently undergoing treatment in serious condition.

On the other hand, police charged three members of Rasel’s gang in a drug case and sent them to court. However, after securing bail, the gang members, armed with sharp weapons and tea-plant cutters, launched an attack on Sadek Ali’s family on Tuesday morning.

Since then, Sadek Ali’s family has been forced to flee, fearing for their lives due to continuous threats from the Rasel gang.

When contacted, Jhenaigati Police Station OC  Al Amin said: “Rasel is absconding. If he is present, necessary steps will be taken to arrest him.”
