Environment Department fines 3 steel mills in N’ganj for pollution

The Department of Environment conducted an operation in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, to combat air pollution, imposing fines totaling 3lakh 30 ,thirty thousand taka on three steel mills.

The operation, led by Executive Magistrate and Senior Assistant Secretary Rezwan-ul-Islam from the Monitoring and Enforcement Wing of the Department of Environment, took place on Thursday, December 9. The team included officials from the Narayanganj District Police and the Department of Environment's Narayanganj office.

Assistant Director of the Department of Environment, Md. Rasel Mahmud, filed the prosecutions during the operation. A press release issued by the Deputy Director of the Narayanganj District Office, A.H.M. Rased, confirmed the details later in the afternoon.

The factories targeted during the operation were: Munta Steel Mills Limited, located in Nanakhi Baroibari, which was fined 2 lakh taka, Salam Steel Concast Re-Rolling Mills (Madanpur Unit) in Kanchpur, fined 1lakh taka and Rahim Steel Mills Limited, also in Kanchpur, fined 30 thousend taka.

According to the press release, these fines were imposed for violating Section 7(3) of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2021, under Section 15(2) of the Bangladesh Environmental Protection Act, 1995.

The Department of Environment stated that such actions against polluting factories in Narayanganj would continue to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

Former Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi on 3 -day remand

A court has granted a three-day remand for former Textile and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi in connection with the murder of school student Roman in Rupganj, Narayanganj. In the afternoon, the Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Haidar Ali's court approved the remand after the district Detective Branch (DB) police presented Gazi with a seven-day remand plea. Following arguments from both sides' lawyers, the court decided on a three-day remand.

Adv Sakhawat Hossain, former president of the Narayanganj District Lawyers' Association and convener of the Metropolitan BNP, stated that Roman was shot and killed during an anti-discrimination student protest in Rupganj.

Workshop on microfinance for new entrepreneurs in N’ganj

A workshop on integrating new entrepreneurs with microfinance institutions was held in Narayanganj.

BRAC organised the workshop wa on Thursday afternoon at a local restaurant in the city. A total of 55 entrepreneurs who received training from BRAC participated in the event, along with 20 officials from various banks and financial institutions.

During the workshop, representatives from banks and NGOs presented their financial products tailored for entrepreneurs and addressed queries from the attendees.

The event’s chief guest, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) of Narayanganj, Sakib Al Rabbi, delivered an inspiring speech. The welcome address was given by BRAC District Coordinator Suman Chowdhury, while Ratan Kumar Das, BRAC’s Manager for the Dhaka region, spoke about skill development initiatives. The event was moderated by BRAC District Manager Mahera Begum. Shahid Ahmed Emad, SDP District Manager, presented details about the SDP Promise Program.

Officials from the Department of Social Services, Youth Development, Cooperatives, and Women’s Affairs were also present.

In his speech, the chief guest, Sakib Al Rabbi, encouraged the entrepreneurs, saying, Those who have joined today as budding entrepreneurs, I hope you will grow into successful business leaders in the future. However, when taking loans from banks or financial institutions, it’s essential to ensure the funds are used appropriately in your businesses. Misusing loan funds will only burden you with debt.

Case filed against 53 people, including 4 members of Osman family in N’ganj

A fresh attempted murder case has been filed against 53 individuals, including former Member of Parliament AKM Shamim Osman, in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj. The case also includes 200-300 unidentified individuals, alleged to be leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliate organizations.

Confirming the matter on Thursday, Siddhirganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Shahinur Alam stated that Md. Abul Hossain Talukder (46) had filed an application in the Narayanganj court, which directed the police to register the case. Following the court’s instruction, the case was officially recorded late Wednesday night.

The accused listed in the case include former Member of Parliament for Narayanganj-5, Selim Osman, Shamim Osman’s son Ayon Osman, nephew Azmeri Osman, Joint Secretary of Narayanganj Metropolitan Awami League Shah Nizam, Siddhirganj Thana Awami League President Mujibur Rahman, and General Secretary Haji Yasin Mia, among others.

According to the case statement, on August 4, around 8:00 PM, a group of students and citizens had gathered in front of the Dutch-Bangla Bank at Chittagong Road to protest. The plaintiff, Abul Hossain Talukder, stated that his son was present at the protest. Allegedly, the accused arrived at the scene and indiscriminately opened fire to suppress the demonstration. As a result, the plaintiff’s son sustained gunshot wounds on his back and other parts of his body.
