Commenting that preparations are underway for the elections by December, Bangladesh Election Commissioner Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar said, we have already collected information from voters by going door to door and registration work is underway. If the elections are held by December, some reforms will be made.

If major reforms are needed, it will be by June next year. We are making all preparations for the elections keeping in mind December and we believe that it will be possible to hold the elections in December.

He told reporters after a view-sharing meeting with various district and upazila level officials on the occasion of updating the voter list in the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Wednesday afternoon.

Responding to the question whether the national elections will be held before or the local elections, he said, if local elections are started, i.e. city corporation elections, municipality elections, union council elections, district council elections, it will take about a year to complete them. Then it will not be possible to stay within the time frame that we have announced.

He also said, we hope that in the next two to three months, our law and order situation, administrative chain of command will improve a lot compared to other times and we will get an environment suitable for holding elections by December.

The meeting, chaired by Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner Fatema Tul Jannat, was attended by District Police Superintendent Md. Shamsul Alam Sarkar, District Election Officer Md. Mozammel Hossain, Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Mahbubur Rahman, Tongibari Upazila Executive Officer Md. Mostafizur Rahman, Additional District Election Officer Md. Jobaida Khatun, Gazaria UNO Md. Ashraful Alam, election officers of six upazilas and police stations were present.
