World Teachers' Day: Even after 53 years of independence, the rights and dignity of teachers have not been guaranteed

World Teachers' Day: Even after 53 years of independence, the rights and dignity of teachers have not been guaranteed

Dr. Muhammad Mahtab Hossain Mazed

Today Saturday October 5 is World Teachers' Day 2024. 30 million teachers and 500 organizations in about 170 countries of the world including Bangladesh, India are celebrating this day in honor of teachers. On this day, teachers around the world are recognized for their outstanding contribution to their work. Although this day is celebrated on different days in different countries of the world, October 5 is the World Teachers' Day recognized by UNESCO. The day is marked by a theme each year – which raises public awareness as well as commemorates the contribution to the teaching profession.

Like every year, the theme of 2024 is: "Valuing teacher voices: towards a new social contract for education". The theme is reasonable in the context of the teacher crisis that exists in the current education system worldwide, especially in the case of Bangladesh it is more significant. Because there is a shortage of quality teachers in Bangladesh, there is also a shortage of required teachers in every educational institution. Yet the number of teachers who are there must all become ideal teachers.

The World Education Association was formed in 1952 to promote the professional status and rights of teachers in the wake of the discussion of the formulation of the 'Charter of Education' in the General Session of UNESCO in 1947. The historic UNESCO ILO Recommendation on the Professional Rights, Duties and Dignity of Teachers was made at the Special Intergovernmental Conference held in Paris on October 5, 1966. In the continuation of this, after a long break, in 1990, Belgium-based or international education organization was formed by 210 national organizations of 167 countries consisting of about 3 million members. The teaching community of 170 countries of the United Nations, including Bangladesh, demanded that UNESCO officially declare October 5 as 'World Education Day' even for 24 hours.

In 1994, the Director General of UNESCO Dr. Frederick proclaimed October 5 as World Teachers' Day at the 26th session held in Paris. On October 9, 1995, 'World Education Day' was celebrated for the first time in Bangladesh as a joint initiative of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and teachers' organizations. Later, the Bangladesh government is silent on this day, but various teachers' organizations are active in fulfilling the demands of the teachers. But on the basis of the UNESCO ILO charter, the day has been determined - even in the 53 years of Bangladesh's independence, the rights and dignity of teachers have not been guaranteed. Quality of education and demand of teachers could not be ensured.

National education policy was not implemented even in 5 decades of independence. Although there are many positive aspects in the education policy, no visible initiative has been taken to implement the national education policy due to the extreme disparity between the public and private education systems. And teachers burn themselves like candles and give the light of education to others. Education awakens people's sense of responsibility. Awakens the sleeping humanity in people by making them aware of their rights and duties. And teachers full of professional sense of responsibility, talent, wisdom and knowledge skills are the unique human resources of the country and nation. And whatever is good for flow, whatever is true, is progressiveness. Those who are in the center of the new youth of his meeting are the teachers. The teaching community is a nebula in the space of the society. From the nebula that gives birth to thousands of constellations, from the source of eternal light rays of teachers are born the single shoots of future social mobility. The whole society, the whole world is made up of them.

And there are three points to note in the recommendations that UNESCO-ILO accepts. These are the rights, duties and dignity of teachers. Among these three things, the state will provide the rights and dignity of the teacher, the society will provide the dignity of the teacher and the duties of the teacher will be fulfilled by the teachers themselves. The main work of the teachers in the world of academic education is class-based. Students will be present in the class and the teacher will address them according to the syllabus. Both teachers and students will participate in learning activities. In addition to classroom activities, examination programs for student evaluation, evaluation of answer sheets, thematic seminars and symposiums will be added in the field of higher education, these are the duties of the teacher.

However, seminars-symposiums are absent in higher education programs conducted by national universities, especially at the undergraduate (honors) and postgraduate levels, except for a small number of higher education institutions. Quality education programs are not conducted in them. Apart from this, there is division between them in the provision of education because the teachers previously appointed in the private sector at the secondary, higher secondary and higher education levels were due to nepotism, political and favoritism.

Those who were interested in the class activities and have been performing the duties properly have been able to acquire subject knowledge. As a result, they are experienced in professional life. There are two more classes here. One of these is the political class—those who attach great importance to politics. They do not live in class activities, they are busy in political activities, when the party forms the government, they are very powerful. No one can tell them anything. And when the party acts as an opposition party, their situation is critical, they cannot enter the educational institutionsIn both these cases they stand outside the classroom.

As a result, they do not become experienced even after a long period of service - their subject knowledge is low. Among them there is another category who live in political shelter but do not do politics. They are also anti-class activities. The teachers of both these classes are week teachers. There is another type of teacher who is involved in the education business. In the classroom they do not give lessons for money, but in the home environment they give lessons in exchange for money. Their subject knowledge is good. But their actions are immoral. Apart from this, there are research teachers, they meet at the higher education level. Although their number is very less, they are of high quality as teachers. Their status transcends the boundaries of class action. Since education is at private level, real experienced teachers cannot be properly evaluated. Hence there is a need for nationalization of jobs. Then weak teachers can be excluded. Transfer them to a third class post in another sector on equal scale and pay. It must be done as a result of dereliction of duty and duty. Note that not all teachers involved in politics are Wicked teachers, but a large proportion are.

Just as education is the backbone of a nation, ideal teachers are the heart of education. Teacher is an honorable word, a great storehouse of knowledge, possessing all human qualities. The importance and necessity of teachers in our national life cannot be overstated. An ideal teacher not only teaches skillfully, but also awakens the latent talents of the students by observing them deeply. His hands produced scientists, writers, doctors, lawyers, bureaucrats, politicians, social workers, and the future of the future. He is the master of creating a generation! The teacher is constantly contributing to the formation of personality and attitude.

Especially in the early stages, the teacher's behavior, values, honesty have a great impact on the life of every tender child. They want to follow their beloved teacher, mastering his behaviors and reflecting them in their own lives. So civilized teachers society has no alternative to make a nation enlightened and high status, teachers are every blessing in our national life.

Qualified teachers can create an ideal nation by instilling patriotism, honesty, punctuality in the minds of every student by creating a negative attitude towards criminality like corruption, militancy, rape. Therefore, their sense of responsibility towards the nation is also very high. May every teacher be well, may the national education system be more prosperous.

> To ensure that students' rights are not violated:-
This is the problem. The problem exists more or less in all countries. Our problem may be more. But even in this we have to advance our education. Just as we have to think about our rights, we also have to pay attention to the fact that the rights of students are not undermined in any way. Remember, students are like our children. They have to move forward in spite of hundreds of adversities, crises, and obstacles. They should be made dreamers for the purpose of building a future Bangladesh from their side. We have to watch very carefully that our deprivation does not affect them in any way. A true teacher must have a fighting spirit to overcome obstacles. And this mindset should be spread among the students as well. Only then will they be qualified to fight to win the battle of life.

The teachers who have become memorable in the world, as they have fought, have left an extraordinary example of patience and sacrifice. Let's talk about our beloved Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). Everyone knows how many insults and tortures he has suffered while becoming the greatest teacher in the world. But through the Holy Qur'an, Almighty Allah never hesitated to teach people the commandments. Not for anything worldly, but to gain the pleasure of Almighty Allah, he has done the work of teaching for a lifetime. As a result, the world today has got a complete way of life of peace, Islam, which is the way to achieve peace and success in this life and the hereafter.

The world famous philosopher Socrates was originally a teacher. And despite the fact that there was no worldly interest behind his teaching, he was sentenced to death by the ruling class of Athens. There was no harm to Socrates, but today he is a memorable philosopher and teacher in the hearts of billions of people all over the world.

Let's talk about our martyr Zia. Through his actions, ideals and sacrifices, he is today a great political teacher to millions of people in this country. The assassins wanted to kill him and erase his name from the history of this country. But the opposite happened. As long as the country exists, as long as there is history, he will live in the hearts of people as a red rose of love and a symbol of political education.

The text can be enlarged with many more such examples. And I don't want to go there. But there is no reason to expect that everyone can become Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh), Socrates or Shaheed Zia. However, in our society, respected teachers who selflessly rise above the norm to work for the students, are undoubtedly remembered and cherished. Get great respect from students. Not only students respect them, but they also become popular in the society. At first glance it may seem that the cadres of other departments are highly respected in the society. But to me it seems different. They deserve respect. But not as individuals, people respect their medals. With few exceptions, when the post is gone, so is their respect. But the respect of an ideal teacher never diminishes. Not even after death. However, in order to reach such an ideal, it is necessary to make sacrifices as well as hard work.

>Teachers day by country:-Teachers day is celebrated in 100 countries of the world. The day is celebrated on different dates in many countries. Eg: Teacher's Day is celebrated on 5th September in India. In Australia, the last Friday of October is celebrated as Teacher's Day. Finally, the World Teachers' Day is not only about protecting the legitimate interests of teachers, but also about making the teaching profession more attractive and teachers' accountability by thinking about the quality education of the next generation, and the basis of student-teacher relationship for the overall improvement of the education systemNeed to be strong and firm.In the western world, the manners of students and teachers are not very important.

But our country has and must have it. It is part of our culture and tradition. This tradition should be maintained. We all have to work together to protect the sacred tradition of love and respect between students and teachers. Because this will benefit not only students and teachers, but the entire nationAnd if timely necessary steps are taken in the light of the national education policy for the freedom and empowerment of teachers, the quality of education will improve. On World Teachers' Day, I extend my sincere respect and best wishes to all the teachers of the world. There is no substitute for an ideal teacher to make an ideal human being.
