World’s finest superfood Amla: Precious medicinal tree facing extinction in Gaibandha

Rich in Vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber, the small green fruit Amla scientifically known as Phyllanthus emblica is widely recognized across the world as a “superfood.”

Health experts suggest that chewing just one fresh amla daily can strengthen the immune system, improve digestion, support healthy skin and hair, and even help manage diabetes.

Gaibandha District is comprised of seven upazilas: Gaibandha Sadar Upazila, Sundarganj Upazila, Sadullapur Upazila, Palashbari Upazila, Gobindaganj Upazila, Saghata Upazila, and Phulchhari Upazila.

Unfortunately, commercial cultivation of amla is rarely seen in these areas. Although a few trees are planted in homesteads, along ponds, roadside areas, or beside betel nut and mango trees out of personal interest, the tree is gradually disappearing.Health Benefits of Amla.

Amla is exceptionally rich in Vitamin C, helping the body fight viruses and bacterial infections.

Supports Diabetes and Cholesterol Control:
It may help regulate blood sugar levels and reduce bad cholesterol (LDL), contributing to heart health.

Powerful antioxidants help delay premature aging, while amla oil—world-renowned for hair care—strengthens hair roots and promotes healthy growth.

Hakim S. Hossain, a  herbal practitioner from Pirganj and Sundarganj, states, “Amla is the world’s finest superfood, packed with Vitamin C. Regular consumption relieves constipation, keeps the body healthy, and improves skin and hair.”

Meanwhile, Ibrahim from Jamalhat in Sundarganj warns, “Amla trees are gradually disappearing. Without proper government initiatives to preserve this valuable tree, it may become difficult to find in the future.

Amla is not just a fruit—it is part of our heritage and natural wealth. If people fully understood its benefits, everyone would plant at least one amla tree. With planned plantation in schools, colleges, roadsides, and homesteads, this precious tree can once again become a common sight in rural landscapes.

Awareness, initiative, and care—these three can save the amla tree.
