Wild elephant killed in electric trap in Sherpur

A wild elephant was killed in an electric trap at Samachura village in Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur district . The elephant died in Samachura village of the upazila near the Madhutila tourist spot at about 10 pm on Thursday.

Forest Department and local residents said wild elephants have been staying in the Garo hills of bordering Sherpur for a long time. During the harvest season, groups of wild elephants come down to the locality in search of food and eat the farmers' crops and destroy trees and houses. People have been trying to prevent wild elephants in various ways by lighting fires, making sound, lighting torches and beating them with sticks.

The wild elephants destruction has started now again during the paddy season. Recently on Thursday , a herd of 40/50 wild elephants entered in the paddy fields in the hilly area of Samashura village in search of food and destroyed many paddy fields. It is known that farmers set electric traps using generator to protect their crops from elephants attack. A wild elephant died on spot after being electrocuted in the trap. Nalitabari police have arrested a farmer named Zia (40 about it.

Madhutila Range Officer of Nalitabari Upazila Dewan Ali confirmed the death of the wild elephant and said elephant died due to electrocution. Details will be known after the autopsy.

Assistant Conservator of Forests of Sherpur Sadequl Islam Khan said a person named Zia has been arrested for killing the wild elephant. A case has been filed under the Wildlife Conservation Act against those who were involved
