Urban life crippled by waterlogging : Narayanganj City disrupted by heavy rain
Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj
Daily life in Narayanganj City has been severely disrupted due to relentless rain, submerging almost all parts of the city since Thursday morning (May 29). Continuous heavy rainfall from morning till afternoon has flooded the main roads, including BB Road, as well as surrounding alleys and neighborhoods, causing knee-deep water to accumulate. The waterlogging has brought city life to a standstill. The hardest hit are working-class people and office-goers who had to brave the streets.
The situation has turned into a near flood in many areas, with rainwater collecting across neighborhoods. Due to the knee-deep water, no vehicles could operate on Narayanganj’s main roads. Most vehicles were stalled—water entered engines, and auto-rickshaw batteries ran out of charge. Working-class citizens were left stranded and helpless.
By afternoon, visits to areas such as Chashara, Deovogh, Baburail, Khanpur, Banglabazar, and Nitaiganj revealed the extent of the crisis—rickshaws were being manually dragged, and many auto-rickshaws and motorcycles lay completely inoperable. Even BB Road, a major city artery, was impassable due to stagnant water.
A commuter waiting at Chashara intersection said, "The rain stopped quite a while ago, but the roads are still flooded. I can't find a rickshaw to go home. I'm having to walk—every path is waterlogged."
Not only roads and vehicles, but many houses have also been infiltrated by filthy drain water. Ground floor rooms and shops were submerged. In several areas, power supply had to be disconnected for safety reasons.
Sohel Mia, a resident of Deovogh and a rickshaw driver, said, "The battery’s dead, and I can’t even get to the garage. Water got into the battery. Now I have to push it back. No work for me today."
According to sources in Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC), such situations recur almost every monsoon due to poor drainage systems and unplanned urbanization. However, no visible long-term solution has yet been implemented.
Though the water began to recede slightly after sunset, many areas remained impassable. On their way home from work, many people were seen walking through knee-deep water with bags slung over their shoulders. Some wrapped themselves in plastic sheets as they made their way home through the lingering rain.
An NCC official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "Most of our drains are clogged. People throw garbage into them—that’s a major issue. But yes, the city needs a long-term plan to prevent waterlogging."
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has warned that rain is expected to continue for the next few days, raising concerns that the suffering of city dwellers could worsen.
