In a united call to defend democratic values in the digital age, speakers at the launch of the EU-funded ‘Swadhinata – Freedom of Expression for Digital Democracy - FREEDOM’ project emphasized the urgency of protecting freedom of expression.
They highlighted the growing threat of misinformation and the need for digital literacy, inclusive participation, and civic responsibility. The launching ceremony was held at Hotel Crowne Plaza in Gulshan area of the capital on Monday.
Jointly implemented by Plan International Netherlands, Plan International Bangladesh, and Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF), the initiative seeks to safeguard freedom of expression, enhance information literacy, and promote online safety. The project adopts a cascading model to engage youth, human rights defenders, civil society representatives, and media professionals across all eight divisions of Bangladesh, with the vision of fostering a more inclusive and participatory digital democracy.
Speaking as chief guest, Dr. Michal Krejza, Head of Development Cooperation and Minister-Counsellor at the EU Delegation to Bangladesh, said, “All of us here understand the special importance of a free society. By enhancing digital literacy, particularly among youth, human rights defenders and media professionals, this project will contribute to building a more informed civic space .” He further emphasized the importance of protecting democracy and freedom of expression, both online and offline.
Shaheen Anam, Executive Director of Manusher Jonno Foundation, remarked, “We believe that freedom of thought and expression is the bedrock of an inclusive and democratic society – one where every individual, regardless of gender, class, religion, physical ability, or ethnicity, has the right to access services and live a life of dignity and security.”
She added that the Swadhinata project is grounded in the conviction that democracy can only thrive when freedom of expression is actively protected.
Faruk Wasif, Director General of Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB), speaking as a special guest, emphasized on the importance of creating a digital fact-checking database and equipping youth, women, and marginalized communities with the skills to access reliable information.
In her closing remarks, Kabita Bose, Country Director of Plan International Bangladesh, highlighted the importance of resisting misinformation and promoting justice in all spheres.

Violence against women is not just a women’s issue – it is an issue that affects society as a whole, we must create more opportunities to empower youths especially girls, women and amplify their voices, support their agency to shape strategies and policies that ensure a better future for us all.” she further said.
The event was also attended by Banasree Mitra Neogi, Director (Governance and Rights Programmes) at MJF; Mohammed Maheen Newaz Chowdhury, Director – Programmes, Plan International Bangladesh; and other senior representatives from both organizations.
