UP member among two killed in Narsingdi factional clash

Narsingdi Correspondent

A union council member and a woman have been killed in a factional power struggle in Narsingdi’s Raipura Upazila. At least 10 other people have been injured in the incident.

The clash occurred in the Methikanda-Najarpur area of the Upazila on Saturday morning, according to Abdul Jabbar, chief of Raipura Police Station.

The dead have been identified as 55-year-old Manik Mia, Ward No. 8 member for the Chanderkandi union council and 32-year-old Kalpona Begum.

Supporters of Raipura Jubo League leader Abid Hassan Rubel and municipal Awami League Vice President Harun Or Rashid have been embroiled in a power struggle in the area for a long time, police said, citing locals.

The two sides clashed in the morning over the longstanding feud and Kalpona was shot amid the violence and died on the spot.

During the clash, Rubel’s uncle Manik took refuge at the home of Bashir Uddin, the union council member from Ward No. 9. Harun’s supporters hacked him to death in the courtyard of the house.

Both of those killed were supporters of Rubel.

“There have been factional clashes between the two sides since dawn,” said OC Jabbar. “We have learnt that two people have been killed and several others injured. Police are at the scene. Details will be available once an investigation is conducted.”
