Unrest deepens at Teletalk over promotion, financial instability

Staff Correspondent

State-owned mobile operator Teletalk Bangladesh Ltd. is facing mounting internal unrest as employees express sharp grievances over promotion policies, seniority disputes, salary grades, and administrative decisions. Staff members allege that the lack of transparent and uniform policies has fostered an environment of systemic discrimination and demoralization within the institution.

The core of the discontent revolves around recent promotion processes, the status of employees recruited in 2005 and 2006, delays in implementing higher salary grades, and the recent issuance of show-cause notices to 66 staff members. Employees claim that while service rules and promotion policies exist, their application is inconsistent and often clouded by political favoritism.

Several officials have alleged that recent promotions were not based on merit, experience, or seniority, but rather on political affiliation. Critics claim that officials associated with the "Bangabandhu Prokolpo Parishad," a professional body closely linked to the former Awami League government, received undue advantages. Disgruntled employees point out that junior staff, with seven to eight years less experience, have been promoted over their seniors, sparking widespread frustration.

Furthermore, employees recruited in 2005 and 2006 claim they have been unfairly sidelined, with many facing stagnant increments. Those seeking higher grades report that a committee formed to address these applications submitted a report over a year ago, yet the administration has failed to take action or disclose the findings, leaving staff in a state of uncertainty.

The situation further deteriorated following peaceful sit-ins held at various zonal offices demanding the implementation of a comprehensive service code, which resulted in the management issuing show-cause notices to 66 employees. Critics also question the role of the Teletalk Employees Welfare Association, alleging that its leadership is too close to management to represent the staff effectively.

A significant portion of the unrest is directed at current Managing Director Nurul Mabud Chowdhury. Employees allege that his tenure has been marked by controversial administrative decisions and favoritism toward his close associates. Rumors of lobbying to extend his term before its expiry have further fueled anger among the rank and file.

Observers warn that if these internal grievances and administrative challenges are not addressed promptly, the employee morale and overall operational stability of the country's only state-owned mobile network could face severe setbacks.
