Two daughters of prominent Khulna physician and Awami League leader Dr. Sheikh Baharul Alam have brought serious allegations against their father, accusing him of forming a so-called “Refined Awami League” and being involved in unethical activities.

At a crowded press conference held at Khulna Press Club at  11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dr. Sheikh Tamanna Alam and Dr. Tasnuva Alam alleged that their father, taking advantage of his close ties with the Sheikh family, has been reorganizing Awami League activities from his residence and the Khulna BMA office.

They expressed grave concern for their safety, claiming they might be killed or abducted at any time for protesting their father’s immoral actions.

Dr. Tamanna Alam said in her written statement that she recently filed a murder case against her father, accusing him of passing off her mother’s death 36 years ago as suicide. She claimed multiple unethical acts by Dr. Bahar, stating that twelve cases are currently pending against him in different courts in Khulna and Bagerhat. The sisters have also filed GD. with Sonadanga Police Station seeking protection.

Earlier, on October 3, Daily Amar Desh published a report titled “Daughter Files Murder Case Against Father 36 Years After Mother’s Death”, which created a huge public stir in Khulna. Many senior citizens recalled the incident and thanked the newspaper for shedding light on the influential physician leader.

Tamanna further alleged that her mother died on November 13, 1989, as a result of her father’s extramarital affairs and physical torture. She claimed that her father continues to maintain illicit relationships with various women, including Hena Rani Bhoumik, an employee of APC Pharmaceuticals, who allegedly has an 18-year-old daughter with him.

According to Tamanna, Hena Rani is married to Chitta Ranjan Sen, who is fully aware of his wife’s relationship with Dr. Bahar and benefits from it financially. She alleged that in exchange for his silence, Dr. Bahar used his influence in the BMA and Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad for political and financial gain during Awami League’s tenure.

Tamanna also claimed that Hena Rani has been gifted 10,000 company shares of APC Pharma, and that Chitta Ranjan Sen used Dr. Bahar’s home address to register his personal car. Once a low-paid employee, Hena Rani has allegedly become wealthy, while mismanagement and corruption have brought the 50-year-old APC Pharmaceuticals to the brink of collapse.

She accused the couple of manipulating Dr. Bahar to seize all family assets and plotting to kill her and her sister for resisting.

In their written statement, the sisters also accused Dr. Bahar of embezzling Tk 40 lakh from a company named Smart Agro BD under the pretext of investment, depriving his sisters of inherited property, selling a Dhaka flat for Tk 70 lakh using forged signatures, and taking a Tk 30 lakh loan from Pubali Bank using falsified documents.

The plaintiffs in these cases reportedly include Mrs. Lubna Jahan (owner of Smart Agro BD), the two daughters, and their aunts (Dr. Bahar’s sisters).

When asked about the allegations, Dr. Sheikh Baharul Alam denied all accusations, saying his daughters were being “provoked by others.”
“Why would such allegations surface after 36 years?” he asked. “Some people are manipulating them to weaken my position and take over APC Pharma.”

Regarding politics, Dr. Bahar said he had been expelled from Awami League and relieved from Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad for criticizing the party and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
