Two arrested for attempt to murder of BNP leader in Kaliganj
Hatibandha (Lalmonirhat) Correspondent
Police arrested two suspects linked to the Awami League for attempting to kill Shahidul Islam (60), a Union BNP leader, in Lalmonirhat's Kaliganj Upazila.
The accused, Hamidul Islam Shishu (35) and Chaiaqul Islam (33), were detained on Sunday night.
A case has been filed against them at the Kaliganj Police Station for attempted murder and armed assault.
Shahidul Islam, a resident of Bhullarhat area in Bhutmarhi Union, had long-standing political tensions with local Awami League supporters due to his involvement with the BNP. Tensions escalated after a March 17 clash involving Shahidul’s son, Mahaimunul Islam, which led to legal action. In retaliation, assailants attacked Shahidul on Saturday evening (March 22) in Bhullarhat Bazar, injuring him severely with sharp weapons. Locals rushed him to Kaliganj Health Complex, where he is now stable.
The victim's family demands justice as police investigate other attackers. Kaliganj Police Station's OC Selim Malik, confirmed legal actions are being pursued. Police have increased patrols due to ongoing tension between rival groups.
