Staff Correspondent
The officials of the Directorate of National Consumers Rights Protection have been deployed to all kitchen markets in the capital Dhaka so that the traders sell onions at the proportionate rate at which they made their purchases earlier.
“We have deployed four teams in Dhaka and they are currently conducting operations against traders who have unduly increased onion prices,” A.H.M Shafiquzzaman, director general (Additional Secretary) of the Directorate of National Consumers' Right Protection, told the Daily Sun on Saturday.
The onion prices surged in the local market, citing the recent extension of India's restrictions on outbound onion shipments until March 31, 2024, he said.
“It seems that the traders bought the onion at a higher rate. The trader must sell onions in proportion to the rate they purchased earlier,” the DNCRP DC said.
The officials of the government agency are conducting raids at different kitchen markets in Dhaka, including Mirpur, Kawran Bazar and Shyambazar to bring the onion price at stable state, he said.
