Six students of Dhaka University on Friday gave statements in a Dhaka court, confessing their involvement in lynching Tofazzal Hossain, a mentally challenged man, at the university’s Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall on suspicion of theft.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saddam Hossain recorded their statements after the police produced them before the court.

The students who made confessions are – Md Jalal Mia, Sumon Mia, Md Mottakin Sakin, Al Hossain Sajjad, Ahsan Ullah, and Wajibul Alam.

Later on, the court sent them to jail.

On Wednesday night, 32-year-old Tofazzal was beaten to death by a group of students.

They caught him from the dormitory and beat him in two phases. Later, he was declared dead at a hospital, said DU Proctor Mohammad Saifuddin Ahmed.

The university authorities filed a case with Shahbagh police station over the incident, detained the six students, and handed them over to police.

Expressing shock at the incident, the proctor said they formed a seven-member probe body to look into it.

Meanwhile, in a press statement on Friday, Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media and public relations) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said they are investigating the case very seriously.

The police are continuing their operations to arrest other individuals involved in the incident and bring them to book, he added.
