A mobile court in Abhaynagar, Jashore, fined a contractor Tk 5 lakh on Sunday night after finding a shortage of 420.2 metric tonnes of government-allocated urea fertilizer during a drive at Shankerpasha Ghat.
Led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Abir Ansari, the drive targeted M/S Total Shipping Agency, a BCIC-contracted shipping handler. Upon inspecting two stashes along the Bhairab River following a tip-off, authorities found 420.2 metric tonnes of urea missing.
Abdul Majid (33), Khulna branch in-charge of the firm, failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the missing supply, according to Upazila Agriculture Officer Lovely Khatun. Majid was fined Tk 5 lakh for violating government fertilizer regulations regarding unauthorized transport, sale, smuggling, or illegal hoarding.
Agriculture officials stressed the need for stricter monitoring to prevent government-subsidized fertilizers from being illegally siphoned off.
