Police have arrested an expatriate returnee named Mamun in Moulvibazar following allegations of using abusive and obscene language against Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in a video uploaded to TikTok. The incident has sparked severe outrage and tension among local Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders, activists, and residents.
Police from Moulvibazar Sadar Model Police Station arrested Mamun from his residence in Shahapur village under Ghyasnagar Union on Friday night (October 3) at around 11:00 PM during a special operation.
Confirming the matter, OC of Sadar Model Police Station, Saifub Islam, stated that an investigation into the allegations against the youth is currently underway. Necessary legal action will be taken following the probe.
According to local sources, the suspect, known locally as "TikToker Mamun," had been posting videos on TikTok over the past two days containing offensive remarks about the Prime Minister. As one of the videos circulated widely on social media, it triggered intense protest and criticism across the region. Following the viral spread, police raided his home on Friday night and brought him into custody. Upon hearing the news of his arrest, a large crowd, including local BNP activists and residents, gathered in the Ghyasnagar Bazar area.
Locals identified Mamun as the son of Nizam Miah of Shahapur village. Reports from local sources also indicate that he has a prior record of involvement in a physical assault case registered at the police station.
Jillur Rahman, Vice President of the District Juba Dal, stated that after the offensive TikTok video went viral, aggrieved local leaders and activists from the BNP, Juba Dal, and Chhatra Dal brought the matter to the attention of law enforcement, prompting his arrest. He added that according to their information, the youth is associated with Awami League politics.
Mir Shameem Ahmed, an eyewitness, BNP leader, and UP Member of Ghyasnagar Union (Ward No. 12), stated that the youth had been making continuous abusive videos over two days. He expressed suspicion that the act was intentionally motivated to cause public unrest and suggested that a larger miscreant network might be linked to the incident.
