Teachers, students demand dismissal of Sabjennessa Mahila Madrasa principal over allegations of moral turpitude, corruption
Mahbub Piyal, Faridpur
Teachers and students of Sabjennessa Mahila Kamil (MA) Madrasa formed a human chain and staged a demonstration on Sunday demanding the immediate removal of Principal Alamgir Hossain over allegations of moral turpitude, financial embezzlement, and administrative misconduct.
Participants gathered on the road in front of the madrasa in the Purba Khabaspur area of Faridpur town around 12:30 PM to press home their demands.
Established in 1989 to promote female Islamic education, the institution is affiliated with the Islamic Arabic University and currently enrolls over 500 residential and non-residential students supported by 30 faculty members. Alamgir Hossain assumed the role of principal on December 1, 2023.
Demonstrators alleged that since taking office, the principal engaged in widespread financial irregularities, including the misappropriation of Tk 3 lakh allocated in two phases by the Upazila Project Implementation Officer, Tk 2 lakh from the District Council, Tk 1 lakh collected from staff under the guise of ministry audit expenses, and Tk 1.40 lakh provided by publishers for institutional grants during the 2025–26 fiscal year. Further allegations involve the unauthorized sale of textbooks and embezzlement of BMEd program funds.
Faculty members and students also accused Alamgir Hossain of exploiting a first-year Fazil student through promises of employment and monetary aid. On August 16, students allegedly caught the principal engaging in inappropriate conduct with the student, following which recorded messaging conversations circulated within the campus. The incident sparked widespread agitation, during which the principal allegedly intimidated and physically assaulted protesting staff and students.
Following the backlash, the principal went on leave on August 19, citing illness, after submitting an application to the District Commissioner and Madrasa President. He has not returned to the campus since.
On August 19, teachers, students, and staff submitted a formal complaint to the Faridpur District Commissioner. Acting Principal Dr. Md. Aminul Islam stated that during a subsequent physical inspection on September 22, Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Education & Welfare) Insana Tanjin Iko recovered performance-enhancing medication and related paraphernalia from the principal's office desk drawer, while official allocation files were found missing.
Farjana Akhtar, a lecturer in the Bengali department, said during the human chain that the institution could no longer function under leadership that compromised the safety and integrity of its students, emphasizing that immediate removal was the only solution. Several students also alleged verbal harassment and inappropriate physical contact by the principal in classrooms.
Rejecting the allegations, Principal Alamgir Hossain claimed the accusations were part of a conspiracy against him. He clarified that his communications with the student in question were strictly professional, as she served as the hostel supervisor requiring regular administrative consultation.
When contacted, Assistant Commissioner Insana Tanjin Iko stated that a formal inquiry committee has been constituted to investigate the written complaints and that official proceedings remain ongoing.
