Students demand quota system reform in Goalando
Rajbari Correspondent
The general students held a protest march and rally demanding quota reform at Goalando in Rajbari.
As part of the 'Complete Shutdown' program across the country, around 12 noon on Thursday (July 18), a protest march was taken out in front of Shaheed Smriti Girls' High School on Goaland Bazar Road and they were stopped by the police when they went to take a position on the highway at Goalando Bus Stand.
At this time, the entire bus stand became loud with the slogans of the students. Students said quota must be reformed. We don't want to cancel the quota, we just want to reform it. The freedom fighters are the sun children of the country they need, but let it come at the level of harmony. We want everyone to get jobs based on merit.
Rashedul Islam, a second year student of Statistics Department of Jahangirnagar University, Sajjad Hossain Sacchu, a student of Chemistry Department of Rajbari Government College and others spoke on the occasion.
After the protest rally, on the way back the protesting students came in front of Lotus Collegiate School on motorcycles and attacked them. Meanwhile
The agitating students moved away.
It is known that in protest of the torture and killing of ordinary students in the ongoing quota movement across the country, the government Goalando announced on Thursday the premises of Kamrul Islam College as the gathering place. As the police had already taken a position there, they took up positions at different places.
Rajbari Additional Superintendent of Police Md. A police team led by Iftekharuzzaman (Sadar Circle) Goalando Ghat Police Station OC Pranbandhu Biswas, Police Inspector (Investigation) Uttam Kumar Ghosh resisted them. Later, the protestors took a stand on one side of the highway.
Rajbari Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Md. Iftekharuzzaman said that the students wanted to hold a march or assembly and ended it peacefully. We are always vigilant to maintain law and order, no untoward incident has taken place here. The allegation that the students were not attacked on their way back after the movement or that the police did not take action is not correct.
Meanwhile, no long-distance bus was seen on the Dhaka-Khulna highway since morning. The number of private vehicles was negligible.
